Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands – Our Town Frederiksted, Inc., (OTF) is pleased to announce a productive series of meetings with the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) to address pressing concerns related to safety and security in Frederiksted. The discussions focused on key issues affecting the town, including gun violence, general safety, loitering, lack of police presence, noise ordinance enforcement, and strategies for securing funding to support surveillance and security initiatives.
During the meetings, OTF leadership and VIPD representatives explored ways to enhance community well-being through initiatives that go beyond traditional policing. While the need for increased police presence and improved lighting in Frederiksted was acknowledged, a significant focus was placed on community engagement and the importance of building trust between residents and law enforcement. VIPD Acting Commissioner Mario Brooks reaffirmed the department’s commitment to not only addressing safety concerns but also to working alongside OTF and the community to build a stronger, more connected Frederiksted. Lieutenant Herminia Rivera, who has a deep connection to the Frederiksted community, shared her commitment to its safety and well-being and emphasized the importance of respect, inclusion, and following through on promises. Immediate steps include increasing police presence where needed to address concerns about loitering and implementing community-based programs that promote inclusivity and trust.
OTF and VIPD believe that by working together with the community, Frederiksted can become a safer, more vibrant place for all residents and visitors alike. These meetings mark the beginning of a strengthened partnership focused on inclusivity, understanding, and collective action.
